They aren't unable to eat, though; they just eat easier food, like dead fish. And the claws apparently grow back in many cases. It's still a little ghoulish, and a bit cruel, but it does kill fewer crabs,

Yeah I mean granted, the alternative is to kill them every time and waste everything BUT the claw meat. It's one of those things that sounds horrible and frankly is horrible, but...carnivores.

but seeing that on the page alongside scientific contention over whether crabs can 'feel pain' (evidence points to yes) made me feel kind of disgusted, to be blunt

Really I just linked that snippet because apparently we needed SCIENCE to indicate that ripping off arms doesn't magically make someone less hungry.

Here, have something weird.

The Sand Bubbler crab sifts for food by eating fucking everything in sight, then spitting up, through the top of their head, a sand pellet of everything that did not happen to be food.

They're rather prolific.
