He's clearly the shrimpy foppish nerd of the Skeksis, and he's going up against the big strong angry one.
He shoulda proposed Trial By Riddles or something

Maybe Chamberlain thought he knew of a weak spot in the stone, from studying it when nobody was looking, but he overestimated his own strength, and unintentionally revealed that weak spot to the General, who used it to destroy the stone.
