by having a team consisting of L14 Spinarak, L17 Totodile, L18 Gastly, L15 or so Onix, and L14 Oddish, and Odd Egg, and triggering a battle with a L30 wild Celebi
Holy crap Pancham is amazing in Super Mystery Dungeon. Stat buffs/debuffs are permanent until cleared by stairs or wonder tile, so Work Up is ridiculous. Arm Thrust was already ridiculous but now it's like a fucking bulldozer.
Which is good, because my first hunting mission put me up against a rival team, all of whom had over 300 HP apiece and two of whom had a room-wide AOE that could oneshot my entire party because this game apparently hates me.
I've heard that Pokémon Go is now available...to people in Australia. Apparently it is free. And if you can tell a source for the download that you're in Australia, you can get it too.
You're definitely just better. The games have gotten considerably harder over the years, what with actual AI and starting to apply EVs (in older gens they were all 0 EV).
And on that note...
> le Flareon invites me to his "Secret Base"
> 3x Nasty Plot and Barrage / Type Bulldozer emera for the inevitable monster house ambush
> I get pulled into the middle of the room and his buddies spawn
> le Flareon actually introduces me to them and I just get free allies
> we all "have a great time"
> Raichu gets blueballed with an apocalyptic voltage and nothing to spend it on
> Flareon closes the event by insinuating, in a way I'm a little surprised they got through the rating, that his friends are banging vigorously
Wow. So uh...Super Mystery Dungeon apparently decided Time/Darkness/Sky wasn't scarring enough. Like, the Timestop Future was bad, but I literally just got murdered by my father and went to a fiery sulphurous Poké-hell infested with demons that impersonate your loved ones and eat the tattered remains of your soul.

Keep in mind Slash is the only thing you have that will actually take advantage of Screech, and anything you'd really feel like using that against is probably going to die faster to your STAB attacks anyway. Like, even when hitting a type disadvantage, Surf still has higher base attack than Slash, and would only be doing marginally less damage because Totodile is statted for physical (and you can't rely on the post-G1 crit rate). Totodile's line doesn't really grow into its physical power until the Gen 4 split and all of its moves that aren't terrible come from one-use TMs or breeding. Like, half the movelist I'd really want -- Rock Slide and Crunch -- would require breeding with a Pokemon so powerful I'd wonder why you're still bothering. You're kind of running into the reason everyone picks Cyndaquil :|
Unless you're at the end of the game Hydro Pump has way too few PP to be all that useful. I forget if Hydro Pump has a buyable TM in this game, but if it does you might want to ditch it for Surf and then switch them when you get to Mt. Silver. EDIT: so you don't have any way of getting Hydro Pump back in this game. Personally I'd recommend Surf anyway for higher accuracy, but your choice.
For general midgame travel, I'd recommend
Bite
Screech
Surf/Hydro Pump
Ice Punch (Goldenrod buyable)
And Screech would be the first thing you ditch for something else. At this point it's only there because there's literally nothing better to put there and you might someday fight a boss you want Feraligatr to kamikaze Screech spam for someone else's benefit I guess. Red's Snorlax maybe.
Thinking about it, Mightyena is a really weird Pokémon from a mechanical point of view. Half its leveling attacks are Dark, but it has terrible Sp. Atk, and was introduced before the Physical/Special split.

Those guys were able to talk about pokémon levels in a setting where levels don't exist.
So either I'm a lot better at Pokémon or these games have gotten much easier

Which moveset is better for Croconaw/Feraligatr?
bite
hydro pump
slash
water gun
bite
hydro pump
slash
screech
Given my insistence on not using TMs and using only naturally-learned moves and HM moves, that probably means I will have this:
Bite
Hydro Pump
Slash or Rage
Surf
Now I'm wondering whether I want Slash or Rage.
I'm also not really sure why you want both Hydro Pump and Surf, but I guess if you refuse to use TMs (???) there's not much else to do.
