OK that's a fair assessment.

But I've never understood this criticism.

We've had real-world-analogue 'mons since Gen 1 and people have been saying "GameFreak is running out of ideas" since Gen 3 at least.

eh, before gen 1 there weren't any wasp pokemon or rock pokemon (obviously) so they weren't redundant in that sense

this bothered me more before i realized nobody complains when a final fantasy or zelda game contains slightly different monsters

Like we've had dog 'mons before but this looks pretty distinct from all of them and shares a type with none (it's mono Rock) so I don't really understand the problem.

My problem isn't real-world analogue, so much as looking too much like stuff they've already done. I had the same problem as far back as Beautifly.
