Try [online service] for 3 months for only 99¢!

This irritates me.

Is there some reason that FREE trials aren't a thing anymore? Like, if I'm paying you for it, it's not really a "trial" anymore, I'm a paying customer and I expect the privileges that come with that.

yeah youtube red is pretty annoying huh

also since it shoots up to ten bucks a month after the trial

but. i don't think "trial" implies that you don't get customer service or even diminished features.

here's the real question: will any single real living human being ever pay for youtube red
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
YouTube Red isn't even the only thing I've seen this with, or I would have just specified that in the OP
  • I've literally never seen this before
  • including YouTube red I had no idea how their payment model worked until just now
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat

most of this stuff seems like it is on the level of cable TV filler

Services I've seen do the "99¢ trial" thing: YouTube Red, Google Play Music (which I guess are kinda the same thing now), Spotify

This is impressively Not Worth Money
  • If I were to pay for YouTube Red it'd be far more for the Google Play Music element. And even then, the free service goes above and beyond what I've ever needed in that side's case.

That, and supporting my favorite YouTube folk, though I'd much rather cut out the middle man and use Patreon for that.

the stuff in that promo video seems to be mostly the same old Content that has been stinking up cable TV for years

Let me tell you. About Fallen London.

Is there some reason that FREE trials aren't a thing anymore?
It's probably AOL's fault for spamming us all with CDs back in the day.

Serious answer: if it was 100% free it seems like it would be pretty easy to just give completely made-up information (and maybe clear your cookies) and just get indefinite free trials. (And if they tried to block it by IP address, that would lock out, for instance, college students living in dorms, which is probably a pretty huge demo for them). So making the trial include that charge is probably the easiest way to avoid that.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.

Honestly, I think I might pay money not to see these things.

they remind me of those web portals stuffed with "general interest" content

The Red Originals are rather aggressively Spike TV, if you know what I mean. Or maybe post-decay TLC, but they seem too inane even for that.

also I'm surprised AwesomenessTV is part of why Comcast wanted to buy DWA, they seem like a crap factory
  • For once, or maybe twice, I was in my prime.

That's their next business model. They'll spam us with that content, and we'll have to pay to turn the spam off and watch anything else.

I thought of that, but if they're asking for credit card details anyways (to charge you when the trial is over), surely they could just check whether or not the credit card is valid? Most people aren't gonna have an abundance of disposable credit cards to use...

Get me to shut up. For just $400 a month, I will stop.
