Is there some reason that FREE trials aren't a thing anymore? Like, if I'm paying you for it, it's not really a "trial" anymore, I'm a paying customer and I expect the privileges that come with that.
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
YouTube Red isn't even the only thing I've seen this with, or I would have just specified that in the OP

Services I've seen do the "99¢ trial" thing: YouTube Red, Google Play Music (which I guess are kinda the same thing now), Spotify
If I were to pay for YouTube Red it'd be far more for the Google Play Music element. And even then, the free service goes above and beyond what I've ever needed in that side's case.
That, and supporting my favorite YouTube folk, though I'd much rather cut out the middle man and use Patreon for that.

It's probably AOL's fault for spamming us all with CDs back in the day.
Serious answer: if it was 100% free it seems like it would be pretty easy to just give completely made-up information (and maybe clear your cookies) and just get indefinite free trials. (And if they tried to block it by IP address, that would lock out, for instance, college students living in dorms, which is probably a pretty huge demo for them). So making the trial include that charge is probably the easiest way to avoid that.

I thought of that, but if they're asking for credit card details anyways (to charge you when the trial is over), surely they could just check whether or not the credit card is valid? Most people aren't gonna have an abundance of disposable credit cards to use...

also since it shoots up to ten bucks a month after the trial
but. i don't think "trial" implies that you don't get customer service or even diminished features.

Honestly, I think I might pay money not to see these things.
