I was confused enough about how to spare them in the actual game.
I can't imagine how they could possibly be even more confusing.
You essentially had to beat them into submission. All of the talking prompts were ineffective and you could only get out of an encounter by running or hitting them until their health was low enough for you to spare them.
I died many times thinking that I could get out of the fights by talking; the final game's variant of the pattern was both easier to understand and a better fit for the game, considering that a big part of the appeal is not having to resort to whacking things until they can't handle it.
