Ah. My favorite part is the Denth Reveal, and Vasher's rescue of Nanrovah's daughter.
I'm a sucker for the hero who isn't good with words dealing with a villain with tons of charisma. Genuine integrity and conviction without the ability to effectively communicate or relate to other people, vs humor and effortless charm, the impossible man who can do anything.
It makes Vasher relatable to me in a way that Kelsier wasn't.
Elantris is pretty good but the fact that it was his first book shows. In particular, as is probably already clear from the prologue, it is a much bigger xkcd 483 offender than his other stuff.
Also also also fun fact: Sanderson hardly ever mentions the skin color of his characters, because explicitly saying that some of his main characters (Vin, Raoden, Vasher, later Kaladin) aren't white is, in his words, "actively discouraged", because cover artists don't want to draw non-white people on the cover for fear of losing readers. Except where explicitly stated, the ethnicities of all characters are up to the readers, and, as far as canon goes, the covers of the books can be discarded.
You can definitely tell that it's an earlier work. The heroes shine a bit too bright, and he's constantly polishing them. Often a sign of someone who loves his heroes a bit too much. Not an unassailable fault -- considering the situations they're being tossed in, some sense of grandeur is expected to combat the sheer odds -- but noticeable.
Here again, he makes a misstep. Sarene tries to sell the nobles on the inherent nobility of the working folk. A good concept, but better handled in Mistborn, where we actually see the good nature of the underclasses before we see the heroes trade on it. Here, the working folk do not have a particularly strong voice.
I am coming around to Hrathren though. As a heel, he's a fairly nuanced one, if not all together sympathetic. When Dilaf eventually backstabs him, I might actually feel bad.

I'm certainly not against non-white Vin, but I also really like the version of her from the cover of Hero of Ages that I used as an avatar before
I guess there's nothing wrong with more than one interpretation though
