  the first four minutes have been character introductions and the only two I remember are the one in the OP and the guy who rapped his introduction.

  Mari Okada is the show-runner on this. Which usually means melodrama, but is absolutely no indicator of quality in either direction.

  he also directed the anime adaptation of xxxHolic which I'm sure means something in some direction, but I'm not sure what.

  In all seriousness, though, I think you're talking about Tsutomu Mizushima. And yeah, his directorial résumé is pretty weird. But then, Okada is responsible for a much weirder swath of shows. Seriously, the mixes of serious hits and astonishing misses is unparalleled, save for maybe Deko Akao.
