can repeatedly trying to play a CD that won't play properly damage a laptop's CD drive?

it's just bouncing a laser around, if there's no problem with the actual drive i don't see how a bad disc would make one?
  • ok, well I don't know how these things work.

I put the CD in and it was having some problem reading it and it was making this weird noise I don't fully know how to describe.

    Do other CDs play properly?
  • Most of em.

The CD in question was from the library basement sale so it not working properly is totally understandable (though there weren't any visible scratches or anything so I'm not sure what precisely is wrong with it).

If whatever physical defects the disc has aren't immediately obvious, odds are it won't hurt your drive. Even a disc with small cracks in it isn't going to splinter to bits in the drive, even in a high-speed one.

That said, there's little point in repeatedly trying to play it? If it hasn't worked the first few times, it's probably not going to work at all.
  • I am of the "think hard enough and it'll fix itself" school of electronic repair. Sometimes it even works!

anyway, how does one repair a non-functional CD

    can you even do that?

I want to rip this collection of Russian hymns from Germany.

If you find a store that sells CDs or DVDs, usually they'll have a machine that can buff out the scratches in a disc. Most places only charge a couple dollars for it.

It's not guaranteed to work, but it's probably your best bet.

I used to go to Blockbuster for that, myself, but uh as you can tell that's not an option anymore.

We used to have one of those, but you had to hand crank it.

I've never tried one of those, but I've heard the versions you get for home use aren't as effective as the ones they have at stores...

Probably not, but it actually worked really well if you could actually crank it sufficiently...
