Why is Panty and Stocking so good?

  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Because it's The Powerpuff Girls but with "adult" humor
  • Because it is.
  • ...And even when your hope is gone
move along, move along, just to make it through
    (2015 self)
    It actually isn't.
  • Depends on your taste.

i confess my first impulse was to respond exactly as Aliroz did, word for word

    but of course, YMMV

    i actually dunno though

i mean when i tried to watch it, i felt it was like, PPG, if you took out everything funny and replaced it with stuff that was crude, but not actually funny because there was no punchline or anything amusing about it, it was just kinda gross

later i heard it was intended as a parody or a pastiche or something along those lines, so it's likely i missed the point in trying to approach it as a regular cartoon, but idk

It appeals to my inner 13-year-old who thinks sex jokes and swearing are the most hilarious things
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Because it's Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi if done by people who actually knew what they were doing.
  • Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi was a work of modern art and I will hear no ill spoken of it.

  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
it was funny for a couple episodes, then I kinda fell off
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
The beau has informed me that it clicks about a third of the way to halfway through but if the humour in the first half isn't your bag then those first four or five episodes are gonna be a slog.

^ PSG or Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi?
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Scanty & Kneesocks Panty & Stocking.

    Hm

That is kind of the opposite of what i was told, which is that if the first episode did nothing for me, the rest wouldn't be any better.
  • Munch munch, chomp chomp...
    Pretty accurate.
  • yeah, the first 4 or 5 episodes are like, blah gross-out humor, and then it starts getting into subverting your expectations and homages and parodies and whatnot.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
my opinion is that the official English dub is awful
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I dunno, what little I saw of it wasn't at all bad acting-wise, just kind of excessive with respect to the swearing. But it's kind of an over-the-top, ridiculous show to begin with.

Stocking's voice was off and there was indeed too much swearing. All the nuance that could be extracted was smashed.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
How much of it did you actually watch, though?

And anyway, Japanese doesn't have a lot of swear words, but it has a lot of insults, particularly in the form of condescending or offensive forms of "you," so translating temee or onore or kisama as "hey, asshole" or "motherfucker" or "you bitch" makes perfect sense to me, because there is no real equivalent.

more than half of the series
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I mean in English rather than Japanese.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    that is what i meant
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    Oh, OK.

Wait, how would you know what nuance was lost if you didn't also watch it in sub, or did you? You've really not made this too clear.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I did watch it in sub. I'm thinking of the inflections of the original voice actors. I think Panty made the leap pretty well and the Americanization of Garterbelt was appropriate but I hate how Stocking doesn't sound as cute and sweet anymore.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
"Cute" adult characters are hard to translate because few Americans have such high-pitched voices. There's Hynden Walch and a few other people but they're not exactly common. So you choose someone who fits the mood and personality of the role rather than the timbre.

Incidentally, the reverse happened with Yamizaki in Welcome to the NHK: The original has a relatively low, snarly voice, while the American take is more nasally and hysterical, but both nail the character's attitude and really get across who this guy is.

I liked the dub plenty, personally.

Stocking being a bit less cutesy didn't bother me because she was really just as bitchy in the original Japanese, and that's what I love about her.

The swearing was excessive but at the same time excessive swearing totally fits the tone of the show, to me. Again, my inner 13-year-old likes it.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I liked the scene where Stocking slapped all those cheerleader tits
  • I still need to see the dub.

Liked it in Japanese, though. I can understand why anyone could find it crass, but I'm genuinely unsure if I ever matured past 13 anyway.
