I like Tails, too, even though I've never played Sonic that much.
I was pissed that they didn't fix anything for the XBLA release. It's still possible to clip through walls, they didn't even convert it for widescreen TVs.

Sonic Adventure was not a terrible game IMO. It had flaws: it didn't play as smoothly as the other Sonic titles in that style, the non-prerendered cutscenes were ugly as fuck, the hub area was poorly implemented and slowed the game down and the fishing levels were dreadful.
Having said all of that, the level design was mostly decent and generally good fun, the Sonic levels in particular were very enjoyable, and the soundtrack was great.
Only levels I didn't like were Big's and Tails. One was... boring and hard to get Emblems for.(even WITH a cheat device) The other was just "following" Sonic(and Eggman). :/
Tails' levels were too short, but otherwise I liked them. They were better than his levels in Adventure 2, which played exactly the same as the Eggman levels even though that completely misses the point in Tails IMO.
Actually, the only stuff I didn't like in Adventure 2 were the Final levels, and the actual Final Story's level. Plus the racing levels.
I enjoyed the rest. :3
I would complain about Tails also being a Gamma clone, but then I learned the only playable characters were meant to be Sonic, Knuckles, and Eggman. I'm quite happy with how it turned out overall. :D
Tails is a mechanic that creates excellent machines. Him piloting a large mech really... doesn't miss the point of him, to be honest. It just shows how crazy prepared he is. Similar to how Eggman sometimes is(although less so).
To be honest it does miss the point, or what I see as being the point, since when I play as Tails I want to play as a fox who can hover, not a walking robot.
I didn't hate his levels or anything, I just didn't think they felt like Tails levels.
