Spelunky is veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery difficult. I've had it for months and still can't reliably get to the last area. Never seen the bonus area at all.
more duck soles ramblings: I hate when I go to Anor Londo and someone tries to invade me but it like, gets stuck so that no one ever actually shows up but the bonfires go out and I can't do anything.
I should kill that lady with the Brass Armor so I can get her armor set and a Firekeeper soul, but I'm not sure if doing so would break the Darkmoon Blade covenant.
I try to play games normally at first, but if it proves too difficult I'm not above savestating and (in some cases) cheat codes. I like to see the whole game, even if I don't do it quite honestly.

ooh there's pvp? so I could kill other players? :D I *love* killing other players!!!!!
about half of the covenants (factions) are PvP-focused. Two are co-op-focused, and one is PvE-focused.
PvP covenants are: The Forest Hunters (you wear a ring and get summoned to invade people who trespass in a specific forest area), The Darkwraiths (you get an item called a Red Eye Orb which you can use to invade anywhere, but only players of a higher level than you), The Darkmoon Blades (you get both an item called the Blue Eye Orb which you can use to invade players of a lower level than you, but only if they've "sinned" [killed another player in pvp] and a ring that lets you get summoned to invade players who've killed Gwynevere in Anor Londo), the Gravelords (I have no idea how they work. NG+ only), and the Dragon Disciples (you get a cool rock that lets you turn your head into a dragon but the method for engaging in PvP with these guys is convoluted and I've never actually fought one of them).
There's also a thing called a redsign soapstone which you can use for non-covenant PvP. I'm a Darkmoon Blade myself.
if you're new (as I am) and looking for PvP I recommend the Forest Hunters since they're by far the easiest to join. Joining the Darkmoon Blades is unintuitive and you're almost always fighting people who are way better than you are, and joining the Darkwraiths is downright sadistic (you have to kill a very hard boss much earlier than you're really supposed to).
What kind of stuff do you have to focus on for a co-op character?
It's less of a build and more of a playstyle. A good co-op character generally has some means of healing (white and gold phantoms can't use the Estus flasks, which is usually how you heal. So you'll usually want either some healing miracles or a lot of humanity. Granted, your host should be willing to heal you with his or her estus, but if your host is new you can't rely on them knowing that) and just in general you've got to be willing to pull the weight, especially if your host is new. Plus, adaptability is important, if your host is a caster you'll want to distract the boss, and vice versa if your host is tanky.
also reading the orange soapsigns on the ground can be important. People will usually put down what kind of build they want to help them (eg. you'll see "need knight" a lot for people who want tanks).

There's more to it than that but the structure isn't totally unlike a metroidvania.

Assassin poems, Poems that shoot
guns. Poems that wrestle cops into alleys
and take their weapons leaving them dead
MeGaLoVania.
I think that would be fun, a few times
also I wonder what Gannon is up to.
