Tangentially, park rangers tend to be the most anal public authority figures for some reason, in my experience
Funny, my experience is more or less the exact opposite.
My family once got lost in a huge nature park and ended up staying after they closed. The park ranger was a bit annoyed that we'd inconvenienced him but he was still really polite and understanding.

well, not to gloat, but as far as I know (and admittedly I rarely have reason to check), the Low Countries are fairly nice places.
I've never heard anyone lobby a complaint against Luxembourg, and my only issue with the Belgians is that they are Belgians.
Luxembourg's handling of women's rights has always been awful, but the Low Countries are mostly good. A few right-wing nuts, but that will happen.
France's issue with Muslims is complicated and stupid. As for the Romani, the rightists in Italy are worse in that respect. Either way, I would still rather be there than here; at least their crazies aren't posing as the "centre-right."
I admittedly know little about the "Lux" in Benelux. It is a silly country and should just be part of some other. Holy Rome is long dead folks, time to move on.
On the other hand, police administration is pretty different from active detective work and extremely different from working the beat. Also, the idea of private security having less accountability and just as much power as a legitimate representative of the law—and in some cases hiring those weeded out of actual law enforcement—is pretty disturbing, if you think about it.
Not really. You're ultimately having to deal with one of two entities that have that kind of power and both, in practice, have very little accountability despite what the law might tell you. I'd rather go with the one that has less reason to bother you, which is usually the privately-hired guard. Usually.

That said, on an individual level... that really depends on who you're dealing with and where. In New York? Trust the cop. LA or Hicksville? Trust the guard.
NY is pretty infamous for having a bad police system, is it not?
New York is not. Philadelphia was; Los Angeles still is.
But in any case, anyone that I have met who has personal experience with the matter agrees that state cops are miles less unpleasant than local cops. Or federal law enforcement. But that's a different matter.
I always want to go on this tangent about how I don't like it when people confuse the Dutch, Belgians, and Germans (sometimes the Flemish are thrown in there too) but I never have a reason to.

I'll admit, that made me smile.
"Jerkop" remains the worst portmanteau ever, for the record.

Also most firefighters I've met seem like decent enough people
Did I ever tell you guys that the house directly behind mine burned down in an arson a few years back? That happened.
Not for me, I don't go to church, Sunday's my day to rest ~ God.
