No, that's actually not a sniper rifle either. It's basically an M-16, which is accurate out to around 5-600 yards, not even close to what a sniper rifle is capable of accurately targeting. Your average assault rifle such as the M16 is accurate up to 3 minutes of angle (think of a circle 3 inches wide) @ 100 meters and the USMC sniper system has to be accurate of to 0.8 minutes of angle (think of a circle .8 inches wide) @ 100 meters.
Almost every military sniper rifle issued is bolt-action. There's semi-auto sniper setups out there, but the military doesn't use them because what's the point? If you miss on the first shot, no matter how fast it reloads, you're not getting another.
The round size for your modern-day sniper rifle are all about the same, too. 7.62 x 51mm, which is like the sweet spot that everyone's agreed on. Definitely a beefier round than the M16'S 5.56, and a lot of people think that because the 7.62mm is a bit larger than the 5.56mm, that it has more killing power. This is the stupidest fucking notion in the world. A bullet, no matter its size or velocity, will fucking kill you.
So these things have to be real "military-grade" super-precise weapons to be that accurate and "powerful", right? Well, the USMC M40 sniper system is basically the extremely common, mass-produced bolt-action all-American deer-hunting rifle, the Remington 300. As far as sniper kills go, nothing on the face of the earth has more certified sniper kills than the Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifle. It's the same one that Simo Hayha used to get his 300+ kills. Bolt-action, 7.62x54mm round size. It's also the cheapest, most commonly available surplus rifle in the world and you can go purchase one at your local Big 5 for $75. Giant sardine tins of 440+ rounds 7.62mm ammo are available for dirt cheap prices online. Why isn't the news media losing their fucking minds over this? Probably because an M16 and the word "assault rifle" look and sound scarier than "Mosin-Nagant."
You know what bothers me? Every time a shooting like this happens, everyone is like "now we can finally have an honest discussion about gun control!" But you know what happens? Nothing. Nothing ever happens.
