this has been the case for over 20 years, actually
Years ago people used to give me shit because I preferred to use Corel over Adobe, and still do. What a lot of people don't understand -- and I don't think even Adobe understands this anymore -- is that manipulating raster or vector graphics isn't that big of a fucking deal anymore. Photo editing, vector illustration, and even video editing don't require software suites that cost as much as a used car.
Heck, Apple themselves have smartened up about it by comparison with Adobe, what with the advent of the Mac App Store and the price subsidization that came with it on many of their apps
