"It's dated"

Because nothing should ever reflect the time period when it was made.

"Dated" doesn't just mean of its time; it means that certain qualities have aged badly.

that's an exception to my complaint

I would say that there is a good stretch of definition between "reflective of the era" and "dated"

To use an example, I'd say that Animaniacs is reflective of the time period it was made, but still entertaining, while the early episodes of the Pokemon dub are a little dated in their 90s-ness, and a bit cliched at times.

Whether something is "dated" has a lot to do with a combination of the quality of the source and what cultural qualities in the world have changed since then which reflect poorly on it.

I'd say much of Looney Tunes has aged well, while some of it has well, not.
  • A lot of people do mix up "dated" and "reflective" to be fair and call something the former when it is more the latter, to be fair to Anonus.

It is a subjective assessment, and not necessarily an insult to the full package per se.
