Hybris, being the first to arrive at a murder scene, is implicated in the crime, and the sheriff has no choice but to detain her. At the 3 minute mark, Hybris is shown being driven away in the back of the police car, and she does not appear again until the final 3 minutes of the episode. The majority of the episode is dedicated to AJ, Dawn, and Nanami teaming up to prove Hybris’s innocence.
Nanami visits her mother in Japan and, through incredibly bad luck, ends up at a murder scene. Nanami takes it upon herself to solve the crime by trying to think the way Hybris thinks. Hybris appears only in “flashback” scenes as Nanami recalls her words. A few of the flashbacks are actually clips from previous episodes.
Hybris and Sheriff Mercury get into an argument when Hybris insists Mercury is too incompetent to do his job without relying on her to help. They make a bet1 over whether Mercury can solve his next case without Hybris’s involvement. Hybris storms out of the sheriff’s office in a huff and does not appear in the rest of the episode. This one’s kind of weird, actually…you’d think they’d have included a scene at the end where she comes back in to wrap up the betting subplot, but it’s just never mentioned again after it’s established.
- The bet is that the loser washes the winner’s car, except, Hybris doesn’t have a car, so if Hybris wins, Mercury has to wash AJ’s car.
