So, I was talking with a friend recently and he told me an old urban legend he heard about a lady who checks into a hotel with her mother, and then morning comes and her mother’s not there and all the hotel staff acts like she came in alone, and I said “that sounds like the plot of the Hitchcock movie The Lady Vanishes” and my friend googled it and learned it was based on a novel.
So my question is: did this idea start with that novel, or is it older.
