Specifically, I’m drawing from the Whedon/Buffy tradition wherein every character has to be Deadpan Snarker®, because nothing endears your cast to the audience more than them constantly being smug and sarcastic to each other even when it’s really not warranted.

Xandra meets up with her old friend, who hasn’t seen her since elementary school

Friend: Lexi! Oh, it’s so good to see you again, Lexi. Did you bleach your hair?

Stella: ”Lexi”???

Xandra: What? There’s more than one way to shorten my name.

Stella, to an Elder Witch: You won’t give me the reagents because I’m “underage”? What kind of sense does that make? I’m trying to brew an invisibility potion here, not build a bomb!

Xandra: Yeah! None of this stuff is anything like what I’d use to make a bomb!

(Stella and the Elder Witch both turn and stare at Xandra incredulously.)

Xandra: What? At least I passed tenth grade chemistry.

Production error: In the episode “When You Wish Upon a Farce”, there’s a scene where Xandra, who’s just wished for unlimited money, is excitedly showing off bundles of 🍭100 bills to Stella. At one point, she fans one of the stacks, but the camera is angled just such that you can see that only the top and bottom of the stack are printed with fake 🍭100 bills, and the rest is blank paper.

This goof actually was caught during editing, but they decided it was still the best take, so they kept it in and just hoped nobody would look that closely. Fanning the bills wasn’t actually in the script—Katherine Lee Hayes just kind of improvised it and C. Madison Ravenswood liked it.

The prop 🍭100 note design is pretty convincing, though. Hayes swiped one from the set and posted pictures of it on Blathr.

It looks a lot like the real 🍭100 bill, but the portrait of Princess Alice has “evil” eyebrows and a mustache scribbled onto it, and of course, some of the text is different.

(Stella and Rudolf, staring at a map on Stella’s phone)

Stella: The school. They’re heading for the school. Rudolf! We have to get Laura out of there.

Rudolf: I’ll bring the car around.

(Later, Stella runs into the library at New Salem High School in a complete panic)

Laura: Stella…you seem to be quite animated this afternoon. Is something wrong?

Stella: Don’t worry about me. We need to get YOU out of here as fast as we can.

Laura: Very well. I shall start packing up. I anticipate being ready to depart within 15 minutes.

Stella: No, no, no, no, no…we can’t wait that long.

(Stella grabs a cardboard box that conveniently happens to be nearby and shoves everything from Laura’s desk into it)

Laura: Some of that is school property.

Stella: We’ll return it later. Come, this way!

(Stella leads Laura to a door at the back of the library)

Laura: This egress is to be used only in emergencies.

Stella: Well, this is an emergency!

(Cut to Stella, still carrying the box, and Laura, looking as composed as ever, running out the door at the bottom of the stairwell, where Rudolf has his car idling in a loading zone, ready to receive them)

Laura: Rudolf. Your vehicle is parked illegally.

Rudolf: I’ll leave as soon as you’re in the car.

Stella: Hurry, hurry, get in already!

(Once everybody is in, Rudolf hits the gas and speeds off)

Millennium: Haven’t you learned by now, Stella Winterborn? One should not meddle with things one does not understand.

Stella: I’m sorry, have you met a human before? Meddling with things we don’t understand is kind of our whole deal. We sent a guy to the moon. Like, the moon up in the sky. More than once, even!

Obligatory “they have to try to help the main character study” episode.

Stella: I don’t understand this one at all.

Laura: For this exercise, you will need to employ Ohm’s law.

Stella: Right, right… V = IR. V is voltage. I is what, current?

Laura: Correct.

Stella: So what’s R, again?

Laura: R, in this equation, denotes resistance.

Stella: But I thought that was futile…

Trinity: What a cute little doggo you got there! What’s his name?

Xandra: He’s Bucky!

Trinity: Oh, like buckyballs!

Xandra: No, he’s fixed.

C. Madison Ravenswood was shocked that the network let her get away with this one.

(Stella and Rudolf are hanging out in front of the high school when Xandra rides up on her bike.)

Xandra: Stella! Rudolf! You’re not gonna believe it! Look what I just got!

Rudolf: An action figure?

Xandra: Not just any action figure. This is the 199X figure of Admiral Winchester from Destination: Infinity. I just happened to be riding past a yard sale on my way to school when I saw it. New in box and everything!

Stella: Huh, I didn’t know you were into that sci-fi stuff.

Rudolf: Or that you collect toys.

Xandra: Well I am, and I do, but most importantly: Now I have the complete set! Oh, other collectors would kill for this!

Rudolf: How much are they worth?

Xandra: A lot, honestly, but it doesn’t matter. I’m never selling mine. Never!

Stella: Oh! Before I forget…

(Stella reaches into her own bag and pulls out a small jewelry box.)

Stella: Elder Witch Trinity gave me this jewelry [Stella pronounces it “jew-le-ry”] box. She said that there’s some important magical item inside, but she doesn’t have the key, and it’s sealed against magic, so neither of us could get it open. I told her you might be able to pick the lock. Would you be willing to take a crack at it?

Xandra: Sure. I could always use the practice.

(Xandra puts the jewelry box in her bag and they all walk towards the school entrance.)

(Xandra is in her bedroom, sitting at her desk with some lockpicking tools, going to work on the jewelry box. The Admiral Winchester figure is on the desk beside her.)

Xandra: Almost there…

(The lock clicks. Xandra opens up the box to reveal…a key.)

Xandra: Did somebody lock the key inside its own box? That’s just a parlor trick. Disappointing.

(Xandra looks at the clock.)

Xandra: I should probably take a shower before Mom gets home.

(Xandra sets the key on top of the Admiral Winchester figure, still in its packaging, and walks off.)

(Xandra and Stella are in Xandra’s room. Xandra is clearly distressed. The empty package for the action figure is on her desk, but the figure itself is nowhere to be seen.)

Xandra: I don’t get it. I only went to take a shower. How did someone get in and out in that time? We’ve got to find my Admiral Winchester figure!

Stella: That’s odd. The package is still sealed.

Xandra: The thief must have glued it back together after they took the figure.

Stella: But why? Why not just take the whole thing, package and all? Surely opening it would hurt the collector’s value…

(Stella notices the empty jewelry box sitting on the desk.)

Stella: Oh, you got Trinity’s stupid little box open! What was inside.?

Xandra: Nothing important. Just—the key. Oh no. They took the key, too.

Stella: The key?

Xandra: Someone thought they were real clever and locked the key inside its own box. And I guess whoever stole my Admiral Winchester figure stole the key, too. I have no idea why, though.

(A door is heard from offscreen. Rudolf calls up the stairs.)

Rudolf, offscreen: Stella, Xandra! I’m here!

Xandra: We’re in my room!

(Rudolf enters the bedroom.)

Rudolf: Hey, is there a sci-fi convention in town or something?

Xandra: Not that I know of. Why do you ask?

Rudolf: On the way here I ran into somebody in an absolutely perfect Admiral Winchester cosplay. He looked just like in the show. Oh! And he gave me this! He said it belongs to you.

(Rudolf holds out his hand. It’s the key from the jewelry box. Stella and Xandra stare at each other silently as they come to a realization. Cut to commercial.)
