I watched the opening scene from the Dark Knight Rises

I feel like I should have done this earlier

    No it seemed pretty silly.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
I mean some of it was kinda cool I guess

I can't believe I used to take Christopher Nolan seriously.

He owes the estate of Heath Ledger royalties.

    Christ.

I think people kind of overrated him because of how good Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight was.

Other than that he's mostly just pretty competent.

That was pretty much what I was saying, yes.

    Yep.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Baneposting recontexualized that whole scene for me.

Yeah, i saw that post, it's a good rundown of the problems with the scene.

Just none of that occurred to me while i was watching, and i've only seen it the once.

i should maybe add that if i'm watching a superhero flick my disbelief is already raised some distance off the ground, so i'll let a fair bit slide that i might not if this were, say, a conspiracy thriller, or a biopic.

When totally removed from context, it just becomes a strange strange thing.

  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.

    [vid]

    That was absolutely brilliant.

You were just waiting for this moment to a rise.

She's trying her best to get a rise out of him.
  • You know who was great in Persona 4?

    Rise.

Touch the cow. Do it now.
given that this is a superhero flick, I'd see nothing particularly wrong with this ridiculous opening scene.

of course, its meme-ification has made it funny and that's fine too.
  • For once, or maybe twice, I was in my prime.
FACT: Christopher Nolan says Inception was his passion project, and that a major motivation for taking on the Batman movies was to earn enough studio clout to make Inception without studio interference.

HYPOTHESIS: His true mission accomplished, Nolan didn't care anymore about Batman when we made TDKR.

    Inception wasn't bad imo

i liked it a lot in the cinema, not quite so much on home DVD
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Inception was alright to me when I watched it a couple years ago, but I have no reason to want to revisit it now.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Well i guess the fact that i got the DVD tells you i liked it
  • My dreams exceed my real life
It's in the genre of "movies that work pretty well in theaters, and you enjoy it, and then you go home and never watch it again"

See also: every Marvel movie, The Matrix, Avatar

Anyone remember Following? Memento? Insomnia? I'd like to have that version of Nolan back.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Memento is the only one of those i've seen.

And it was a good film.
  • I actually own the DVD of Inception but have never watched it.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
it seems somehow darker, dimmer, on a small screen
  • it seems to me that lots of movies nowadays are designed to not look good unless you are watching on a huge-ass screen
  • that sounds a tad tinfoil hat but I stand by it
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
it's not tinfoil hat, it kinda makes sense if they were making it with the optimal cinematic experience in mind and not caring about the DVD release

short sighted of them but i can picture them doing it
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
also i guess these days big TVs are more commonplace than they were once
  • I was more thinking that they are doing it in collusion with cinemas to get more people in there
  • For once, or maybe twice, I was in my prime.
Insomnia was a remake of a Norwegian(?) film. What’s strange is how its climax is a precursor to Two-Face's death scene in The Dark Knight ... but the protagonists choose exactly the opposite of what Batman and Commissioner Gordon chose.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    oh

well i think it's more likely the thing i said about TVs being bigger

    but maybe you're right

    that's rather interesting

i wonder if he wanted to revisit the scenario

perhaps he changed his mind, or perhaps it was a what-if thing

Either that, or the moral decision in the bizarre context of a superhero narrative becomes much less acceptable in a more down-to-earth crime story.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
They've always done that to a degree, Naney.

Stuff like CinemaScope tried to purposely look better in the theatre than on television as far back as the 1950s.

This is also true of videogames.

It forced me to get an HD tv.

I watch Inception about once every year.
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
I liked Inception and the Prestige when I watched them.
