    Aw dang, Mach, what is that?  It doesn't look possible!  Where is it!

    It's otherworldly, like a dream...

    They look a bit like the tops of hoodoos, except huge, mountain-sized, even.

    Lots of really great paintings and photos have been done of the mountains in the motherland, and they're still not done.

    So, I looked for said paintings of the Guilin mountains.

    Oh, how could you ever be done with painting that!

    If I could be there, to see this place, I could die content.

    I prefer the more stylistic, black-and-white ones but still very detailed, or the more abstract inkwash ones. The ones we tend to paint.

    But those are also really good.

    Because it looks as though these are two paintings of the same ???? from the same vantage point.

    @Odradek:  That's a lovely legend.  It sounds like a good trip.  Are there any pictures of the two islands/cubs?

    On this island, Ball's Pyramid, in the year 2000 scientists found a species of stick insect, sometimes known as the Tree Lobster, living under the island's single bush a hundred feet up. There were 27 of them, which was a surprise to the scientists, because the entire species had been thought dead since 1920.

    The survivors are now being bred in captivity with great success.

    Taiwan was a weird place to visit in terms of architecture and like, placement. I'd turn a corner and there's a spot I'd see in Shanghai, old and Chinese, and I'd turn another and there's a spot I'd see here in Singapore, modern and western-ish. The roads, the buildings, the people...

    Mandarin will get you most of the way in China. It's pretty much the official language anyway.

    There's also crater lake, I guess, but I was never all *that* impressed by Crater Lake, in all honesty.

    Oh! And the Painted Hills are amazing. I would like to go in person at some point. I've been to Crater Lake, Silver Falls, and the Oneonta Gorge, but a lot of Eastern Oregon other than Bend and Hart Mountain are mysteries to me.

    Okay, done pic-spamming now. Oregon is just too pretty. 

    I may like living in Washington better, but I think Oregon has a lot more to offer in terms of scenery on the whole.

    are there not any in washington? I thought the climates were pretty similar.
