Why rap is not art

Is X art is a question that is often asked of many things. In the case of rap, the answer is a clear no. Rap is not art because rappers rarely, if ever, mention the works of British poet Philip Larkin.

This is a proof so clear and reasonable to scarcely admit refutation, although a few would try, pointing to rap "lyrics" that may mention Plato, Coleridge, or Cervantes. This may be admitted, but is also true that rap as an artform is very much NOT about, or even remotely about, the works of British poet Philip Larkin.

Perhaps one day rap will rise to the level of an art, but as things stand now, it is not an art because it is not about the works of British poet Philip Larkin.
