How can Carbon-14 have a half-life of 5770 years?  That would mean its life is 11540 years, and the universe is only 6000 years old!

You know who understands carbon dating?

    Your mom.

Seriously, she's a very intelligent lady. She can explain these things to you.
  • it depends on stuff that goes away gradually being formed from other stuff due to the effect of some other stuff affecting it, so if you know how much stuff is in something now and how much stuff used to be in it the last time it was doing stuff, you can take a decent stab at how old it is.
