I tend to enjoy strong aesthetics whether they're realistic or abstract. It's less about the level of abstraction for me and more about how it's being used.

It seems to be the general opinion. For one thing, it seems like the public prefers the intricacy of the old-style Disney look/Disney Renaissance style to things that stem from, like, UPA.

The success of Adventure Time, all the shows that now want to look like Adventure Time. Gravity Falls, Gumball, Regular Show.

These productions have high statuses and it's working for them.

Commercial logos tend to lean towards the iconic and abstract; action films have recently been leaning towards "grit" with stylised interactions and realistic violence; book jacket design is all over the place; and so on.
